In Japan, there is a game called u201cKarutau201d. It consists of 25-50 cards with short phrases written on them and another set of cards with pictures that match the phrases. One person reads the phrase cards while the others compete to quickly grab the matching picture card from the floor. It is believed that u201cKarutau201d evolved from the Portuguese word u201cCARTAu201d, which was introduced to Japan by a Portuguese ship that drifted to Tanegashima Island in 1543. Around 1848-54 (late Edo period), u201cIroha Karutau201d, which is similar to the current u201cJomo Karutau201d, was born. Following this style, in 1947 after the war, when the atmosphere was dominated by exhaustion, u201cJomo Karutau201d was created with the concept of providing children with something bright, fun and hopeful. It consists of 44 cards featuring Gunma Prefectureu2019s history, great people, industries and other things to be proud of. It has been incorporated into elementary school education and as a result, people who spent their elementary school years in Gunma can almost recite all the cards from memory. It has become a part of Gunma Prefectureu2019s identity.
